Delhi gang-rape: Candle-light vigils as India remembers braveheart

Delhi gang-rape: Candle-light vigils as India remembers braveheart

New Delhi: India on Sunday marks 12 months since the death of a student savagely gang-raped on a Delhi bus -- an episode that sparked nationwide protests -- with candle-light vigils and prayers.
The 23-year-old physiotherapy student died on December 29 last year, nearly two weeks after being brutally attacked by a gang of six men on a moving bus as she returned home from the cinema with a male companion.

The attack and her subsequent death shook the country, shone a global spotlight on India's treatment of women and unleashed seething public anger about sexual violence and harassment of women.

The victim's family will hold a religious ceremony in their ancestral village in northern Uttar Pradesh state, away from the constant media attention they have faced since the attack, her brother said.

"We want to remember her in a quiet way, away from all the glare. We want it to be a private, family moment," the brother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told a news agency.

The family will follow traditional Hindu rituals on Sunday, with a prayer ceremony and symbolic offerings made to their ancestors, which are believed to bring peace to those who have died.
The student, who was repeatedly assaulted with an iron rod during her ordeal, has been praised for her determination to report her attackers to the police before she died of her injuries.

Four of her attackers were convicted and given the death penalty in September after the case was fast-tracked, while a juvenile was sentenced to a detention centre.

The sixth convict died in prison in March in an apparent suicide.

The angry and sometimes violent protests against the attack jolted India's Parliament, which this year passed tougher laws against rapists and other sex-crime offenders.

Women's groups say some improvements have also been made in the last 12 months to India's notoriously slow, inefficient and sometimes corrupt police and judicial systems, which has encouraged some victims to report sexual crimes against them.

In the capital on Sunday, scores of students, professionals and others were slated to gather at Jantar Mantar, a protest site in the city's centre, where a makeshift memorial has been set up for the victim.

Small lamps, candles and flowers will be placed around the memorial before a peaceful vigil in the evening, one of several expected to take place across the city.

One of the organisers said women who turn up at Jantar Mantar will be encouraged to share their own experiences of violence and discuss societal changes that have taken place since the student's death.

"We need to remind the society that sex crimes won't be tolerated anymore," student Ishaan Ahmed told a news agency.

Devyani arrest

With the Indian government withdrawing the facility of duty-free imports of food items and liquor in retaliation to the "ill-treatment" meted out to diplomat Devyani Khobragade, the families of American diplomats will have to make "alternative arrangements" for the Christmas-New Year week.

American employees at the US embassy in Delhi and consulates in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad used to get imported food and liquor at much cheaper rates - sometimes half the market price - since they could import these items without paying taxes and duties.

The US embassy in Delhi has a full-fledged "commissary" where these items are sold to American diplomats. The consulates in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad also have a similar system for making these duty-free items available to their staff. Sources said the commissary stocks luncheon meat, cheese, cold cuts, salamis, breads, pasta, antipasti, gnochhi, chocolates and even water.

"We used to get our fill of cold cuts, cheese and wine through the commissary, but now we will have to make other arrangements," an American diplomat's wife is learnt to have told her Indian friends.

However, an American diplomat said, "India is not Afghanistan or Iraq. In India, we get everything in the shopping malls and prominent markets, like Khan Market and Defence Colony in Delhi. The only thing is that they may be a bit more expensive... but we will not let this spoil our Christmas and New Year parties."

Several European diplomats have volunteered to help out, said an American diplomat. "Even a Russian colleague told me not to worry about the duty-free provisions. I think that's very sweet on their part," said another American diplomat. When contacted, Lee McManis, acting spokes-person at the US embassy, said, "We are reviewing all requests we have received from the Government of India. The US embassy in New Delhi has provided interim responses to India's diplomatic notes." He refused to elaborate further.

Why more time to AAP asks BJP

Why more time to AAP asks BJP ஆட்சியமைக்க மக்களிடம் ஆம் ஆத்மி கட்சி கருத்து கேட்பது நாடகம்: பா.ஜனதா தாக்கு Why more time to AAP asks BJP

Katrina Kaif latest news

Katrina Kaif has had no release in 2013. But she is gearing up for her big film Dhoom 3, which hits the screens in the art week of the year. The film that is expected to break all records. The Dhoom franchise is all about guys and bikes but still incomplete without the femme fatales and Kat is all set to wow in an ultra glam avatar. I am meeting her after a long time and in the first few moments I begin to wonder if this is the new Katrina. Softer, mellower, and with her guard down.

Yes, she is still not ready to talk about her relationship with Ranbir Kapoor but she isn't as cagey as she used to be. In between chiding me for asking personal questions, she talks about working with the three Khans in an interview that was rescheduled three times because she is so busy. Over to Kat...

Have you seen the previous Dhooms? Yes, I have seen both of them. I don't remember the first one as it was too long ago but I remember the second one very well. There is no franchise like D3 in India. It's very innovative for its time. It is the traditional cops and robbers story but the format is innovative. It was a clever idea.

What prompted you to take up this role? It was the script. They came up with a really good story and were not just relying on the Dhoom franchise. For me honestly, from a personal perspective, it was the performance and the dance sequences. For me to get the chance to experience circus performance and acrobats was fabulous! Dance in the last few years has been a big passion for me. It's an aspect of our industry which sometimes is a little under-recognised. The chance to do the kind of acts I got to do in D3 — with the straps, hoops, acrobats — is something that would not come to me again and that was where my head was at that time.

It must have required a lot of training... Everything in the film required a lot of training. It's much harder than it looks. Even in the song like Malang which is just eight-nine minutes, it looks easy...You may appreciate the sequences but doing the act on a hoop is not easy. Nor is training yourself with straps etc and it takes lot of time. I am also one of those people, especially when it comes to dance, performance and physical execution of things, who won't stop until I feel I have got it right to a certain level. I will probably do more than what I am asked of or required to do because I feel that it deserves that.

You didn't sign film because of Aamir Khan who you hadn't worked with? These things are secondary. Especially now that I have been here for a few years and have the experience. It's really about the films you leave behind... If you get a chance to work with three superstars then it's an added bonus. They are superstars, they are passionate about their work, and extremely talented so working them is great.

Who is the toughest Khan to work with? No one has been tough or bad — the three Khans are all great people but the equations I have shared with all three are different. With Salman, whom I have known for nine years, my equation is different. Shooting with him sometimes does become awkward because you know the person so well. Like during the Mashallah song in Ek Tha Tiger, he kept laughing when I was singing the romantic lines. When Kabir would come and say, 'Salman we have to shoot the song', he would just brush him off and laugh. What is so funny? Nobody else in the country finds it so funny! (laughs) But with Shah Rukh and Aamir... there are two actors, two people who don't know each other so well so it's more about the work.

All the Dhoom girls from Esha to Aishwarya are known for the glamour factor. Have you upped it for this film to keep pace? I don't know. I don't think there are people who go to work and say, 'Today let me just chill out and let not try hard and do much.' I have done my best too. Upping the glamour quotient has been done within the script parameters and what was defined for me. I went into the film with the intention of doing what written and given to me – the songs and performance and doing the best of what I can and pushing myself as much as I can. In my capacity I have given everything that is possible for me to give.

All Dhoom girls have worn bikinis. Have you? No, I have not worn any bikini. If I had worn one, don't you think it would be in the promos by now? I don't think in any part of the world what I have worn in the poster will be considered as a bikini considering my bikini experiences this year! (laughs)

So have you sworn off them completely in real life? No. I have not sworn off wearing anything. I am not that childish. If you are asking if I will stop wearing bikinis in my personal life, while on holidays then no, I won't. The pictures came as a shock. It didn't happen in year one of my career but in year 10. In that moment when one is hurt or upset one will react on impulse and that [writing an open letter to the media to not invade her private space] was my impulsive reaction. Some people told me I should have reacted and some said I shouldn't have reacted at all. Both opinions were right.

Don't you think paparazzi invasion comes with the territory? At that moment I felt it was unnecessary. It was very unlike what happens here in India. It's been happening in the USA for many years. Have I seen it happen here before? No. Now will one see it happen more often? Perhaps. It will become a norm but at the time it happened it wasn't the norm, not in our film industry.

Your colleagues say you come across as cold. Comment? (Smiles wryly) With all due respect to anybody who made the statement that I am cold, it's probably the most ignorant statement that one could ever make! People like me (Cancerians) always put up a front or wall around us... In fact, even now I am hating answering this question because I hate explaining my personality to people who can't understand me.

Please continue... If they don't see the truth, they don't have to know the truth. That's what I believe. You build a wall to protect yourself. I think I am the most sensitive person that you will probably ever meet. I feel hurt not in a normal way, like most people do. My hurt is multiplied by a 100. The highs and lows I feel are extreme — when I feel low it is painful. And those lows are only brought by things in your personal life. So do I hurt? Yes! Am I a closed and guarded person? Yes! But I have been that even as a child. I'm a very emotional personal but I know that there's a place and time for it and I keep that side of me where it needs to be and don't carry it with me to work on a film set. Also often there are times you are in a very vulnerable space and you are finding it hard to keep up appearances with your emotions scattered all over the place, but you keep up a professional front or face.

What really bothers you? So many things can hurt you... We feel the impact of so many things... Life is going alongside work. There's the thought of the future, of what are you doing today, about the the people in your life who are supporting you and are alongside you... You have things in your life that are meaningful and worthwhile, there's the responsibility of your family, there are two million things going on inside your head and they are very least of the stress is about work really.

Going by your calm façade one would never imagine that… What do you benefit from putting your emotions and vulnerabilities on display to people who may not have your best interest at heart or who may not be able to help you or use it in the right way? So I don't choose to do it.

There have been rumours of an impending wedding. Fact or fiction? Complete fiction. There's no thought or plan in my mind about marriage right now. Why are people talking of my wedding and putting us out there when the thought or conversation is not even there? Maybe this started after Kareena came on KWK but I wasn't on that show and that's unfortunate for me and if I am not mistaken Ranbir also didn't say anything about marriage. The comments were made in jest. That's all.

Many thought she was getting you 'married off' to snuff out competition. That's a very layered and complex way of seeing it (laughs) and I wouldn't even go down that road! Why make life full of complexities? I see the comments she made as a joke to her cousin. But on the flip side of it is there is no truth to it because firstly I am not getting married and secondly no one has asked me to marry him.

No one has proposed! Nobody! And this realisation hit me last week when I was on the way home after a press conference. Everywhere I have been asked, I have been saying I won't get married for the next five-ten years, but the fact is: Nobody has asked me even yet! (her eyes twinkle)

You seem to be the only one not talking about Ranbir. Why? Is Ranbir talking about me? Is the other person involved talking about me? No. Am I talking about it? No. Which means the two people who are the topic of this conversation are not talking about it. My stance won't change. I don't feel the need or want to talk about my personal life.

Reportedly Ranbir proposed to you on his birthday… Where do these nice stories about my marriage proposal come from? That's not where my life is at the moment. Marriage is not happening anytime soon but I promise you that the day someone proposes to me and I say yes, and we are engaged, I will never hide it. I will never prolong the time between the proposal and engagement to marriage. There is no reason to hide or be discreet about something like that.

But in love one has to be discreet? Being in love and being in a relationship are two different things. A relationship which is not fully committed to, or which has not yet reached a culmination is something I believe you should be discreet about. And I have always tried to be discreet about what's in my life.

Why is that? Because that's my nature. It is my nature. I guard what's close to me and I guard my feelings. And you are talking about my feelings? A relationship is also about half of your feelings and half of somebody else's. Why do I need to talk about somebody else? I have developed this guardedness about my personal life from the beginning and also it was an advice that was instilled in me early, when I started out perhaps, and then later it became a part of me…

By Salman? He is known to do that. By who it's not important. It just came about and now it has become a part of me and something I don't think I should change.

You never spoke about Salman also when you broke up... No. I never spoke about Salman ever. Why should I? As an actor, there are many complications and speculations... Why add to it and put it out there for opinions? And it is out there. I am not dumb to not see that. But to that extent it is okay. It doesn't need to be dissected upon anymore until the time one is 100 per cent sure where this relationship is going to culminate.

Are you in love? Yes or no? (Grins naughtily) I won't answer that as it will add fodder to more speculation. It's a something that people in my life and the person in my life or the people I am hanging out to know. And hopefully they do, or it's a sad state (laughs). Do they know if I love them? Yes. Do I feel the need to say if I am in love in print? No. I don't want to say I am in love.

Ranbir once said that apart from his family and Ayaan, you would be one person he would give up his life for. I really hope that's true. I think that friendship, support and being there for each other in life is extremely, extremely important and if I was ever in need, I really hope that he (Ranbir) would be there for me and that will be a great thing because being selfless in life is important.

Do you believe in selfless love? I believe selfless love is an idealistic concept. I feel people should find a balance between the good and bad times and what you need and what you can give. Relationships and everything in love and life is give and take. You can't always expect if you are not giving anything but the foundation or the base is very important. You should have a firm base on which your love is based. Your support and priorities should be very clear, correct and precise.

Who or what are your priorities right now? My work, my family and what is my personal life consisting of my friends and the people who are there in my life.

Who? Ranbir? I am not going to name… (laughs). Everyone knows we are friends and the people who are in my life.

Is he a friend or someone special? Why do you have to give everything a tag? I know a lot of people who give sweeping statements about people they are supposed to be feeling emotional about but they are not even true but exaggerated! So why do you want me to make untrue what is true in my case? Is Ranbir an important part of my life? Yes, of course! Ranbir is an extremely part of my life but beyond that I can't say anything more.

But you would like to get married and have babies at some point? Yes I think so. When I see my sister's children I feel like having children… eventually… Not thought about how many.

Delhi LG will explore all options of forming new govt: Shinde

As Delhi returned a hung verdict in the assembly elections, home minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Monday said the lieutenant governor (LG) will explore all options of forming a new government before taking a call.

"The LG will first explore all options of government formation. As of now, the home ministry has no role in it," said Shinde.

He was responding to a question on the possibility of imposition of President's rule in Delhi after the results of the assembly elections where no party got absolute majority.

Sources said the LG is expected to call the single largest party BJP, which along with its partner Akali Dal's one seat has 32 MLAs, to know whether it is ready to form a new government.

If the BJP declines to form the government due to the lack of majority in the 70-member house, the LG then may ask the second largest party - the Aam Admi Party which bagged 28 seats - whether it is in a position to form the government.

Sources said even though both BJP and AAP had declared that it would not stake claim of forming the government, the LG will individually talk to leaders of the two parties Harsh Vardhan and Arvind Kejriwal respectively.

After that the LG will send a report to the home ministry for future course of action.

If the LG suggests for President's rule, the home ministry will move to the Union Cabinet. If the Cabinet is convinced with the LG's suggestions, it will recommend for President's rule by keeping the assembly under suspended animation. PTI

Shakrukh khan gives tips out on romance

New Delhi: Shah Rukh Khan, who is considered Bollywood's undisputed king of romance, had some valuable tips on romance to share on his recent visit to the capital.

Shah Rukh has featured in a string of romantic films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kal Ho Naa Ho in his over two-decade career in Hindi filmdom.

Here's what he had to say:

- Never disrespect a woman in words, action or spirit.

- You should always take care of small things like opening the door for a lady and never sit before she sits.

Saudi militants behind attack on Defence Ministry: Yemen

Saudi militants were behind the massive car bombing and assault on Yemen's military headquarters that killed more than 50 people, including an Indian nurse and other foreigners, investigators said in a preliminary report.

Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was retaliation for U.S. drone strikes that have killed dozens of the terror network's leaders.

The attack - the deadliest in Sana'a since May 2012 - marked an escalation in the terror network's battle to undermine the U.S.-allied government and destabilise the impoverished Arab nation despite the drone strikes and a series of US-backed military offensive against it.

Military investigators described a two-stage operation, saying heavily armed militants wearing army uniforms first blew up a car packed with 500 kg of explosives near an entrance gate, then split into groups that swept through a military hospital and a laboratory, shooting at soldiers, doctors, nurses, doctors and patients.

Officials earlier said 11 militants were killed, including the suicide bomber who drove the car. It was not clear if the 12th attacker was captured or escaped.

The investigative committee led by Yemen's Chief of Staff Gen. Ahmed al-Ashwal, on Friday said militants shot the guards outside the gates of the military hospital, allowing the suicide bomber to drive the car inside, but a gunfight forced him to detonate his explosives before reaching his target. It said the 12 militants killed, included Saudis.

The report also raised the death toll to 56 and said more than 200 people were wounded. The foreigners killed included two aid workers from Germany, two doctors from Vietnam, two nurses from the Philippines and a nurse from India, according to Yemen's Supreme Security Commission.

Two military officials said that wounded soldiers had told them the assailants who stormed the hospital separated out the foreigners and shot everybody in the head.

Other military officials said American security agents were helping with the investigations, but that could not be confirmed. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to brief reporters.

Yemeni commandos and other security forces besieged the militants before they could reach the ministry's main building, preventing them from going further than the ministry's entrance gate.

Yemeni security forces launched a manhunt in the capital to find the perpetrators, sparking gunbattles that killed five suspected militants and a Yemeni commando, officials said.

The committee, which sent its report to Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, did not explain how it came to its conclusions. The report was read on state TV.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, as the group is known, is the product of a merger by the group's Yemeni and Saudi branches after a crackdown in the powerful neighbouring kingdom. Among its leaders is another Saudi, Ibrahim al-Asiri.

08. 10 am: Tejpal spends night in lock-up with murder accused.

Tehelka magazine editor Tarun Tejpal spent the night at a police lock-up here with two murder accused and an anti-social person, after he was arrested by the Crime Branch.

Tejpal, who was arrested in a sexual assault case, was referred for mandatory medical check-up at Goa Medical College near here at 12:30 midnight.

He was taken to Panaji police lock-up at around 2 am, after his medical check-up. Police sources said that Tejpal will share the lock-up with three more people including two accused of murder and one arrested under preventive action.

The Crime Branch sleuths had posted their guards outside the lock-up.

The dingy lock-up is located inside the Police Headquarters in Panaji, overlooking the office of the Director General of Police (DGP).

Police sources added that he remained calm after his arrest, during medical check-up and also in the lock-up.

Tarun Tejpal in Goa.

The 50-year-old-journalist refused to talk to the media after his medical check-up, when he emerged from Goa Medical College.

He was accompanied by his lawyer and his family joined him outside the Police Headquarters, before he was taken to the lock-up. He was supplied with a new pair of clothes by his family, as allowed by the Court.

Tejpal would be taken for remand early today morning.

A lady journalist, employed with Tehelka, had accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her twice on November 7 and 8 in Goa. He has been booked under Section 354A (outraging the modesty of a woman) and 376 (2)(K) (custodial rape) of IPC.

17 die in Nigeria church stampede

17 die in Nigeria church stampede

Officials say at least 17 people died in a stampede at an all-night church vigil disrupted by politicking over a contentious November 18, 2013 gubernatorial election in Nigeria's southeast Anambra State.

Police Deputy Inspector-General Emmanuel Kachi Udeoji said the stampede occurred before dawn Saturday at an All Saints' Day open-air vigil attended by tens of thousands and organised by St. Dominic's Catholic Church in the town of Uke.

Anambra government spokesman Mike Udah said he counted the bodies of 17 victims at one local hospital.

Newspaper and TV reports say outgoing Governor Peter Obi attended the event earlier but left after he was booed as he tried to promote his gubernatorial candidate.

Some witnesses blamed both contesting political parties for the chaos.

Pakistan asks Iran for clarification on gas pipeline

Pakistan asks Iran for clarification on gas pipeline

The Pakistan government has asked for a clarification from Iran after its Oil Minister publicly stated two days ago that the peace pipeline project was likely to be annulled.

Federal Minister for Petroleum Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Friday said that there was an agreement signed between Pakistan and Iran for the gas pipeline and it cannot be called off unilaterally. The government had asked for a clarification and also a meeting to discuss the project and its future, he said. The meeting could be held later in November depending on when Iran responds.

He said that media reports cannot be the basis for judging if a project is called off or not and no official word had come from Iran on this. The pipeline project is facing flak for not negotiating a proper price for gas which is linked to international crude oil prices. There are provisions for heavy penalties if the Pakistan government does not fulfill its share of building the pipeline for which it had last month sought funds from Iran. Mr. Abbasi said these issues including the penalty clauses will have to be discussed when the meeting with Iran takes place.

On Thursday, the Pakistan government said it was committed to the project and was exploring all means of sourcing energy keeping in mind the acute shortage. This winter in Punjab for three months gas will only be supplied for cooking purposes and vehicles will not get compressed natural gas.

The government was confident of signing a construction contract for the pipeline but that will remain in limbo till the Iran government gets back on the issue. Mubin Saulat, managing director of Interstate Gas Systems Limited, a public sector company, said while most of the 1,100 km portion of the pipeline in Iran is complete, financing the project for Pakistan was a challenge. But there were other positive developments in the project for instance, the design was completed.

While the construction should have started by now, he said it was not was rocket science and if everything falls into place, the project could be completed as scheduled next year end. "It s challenging but not impossible," he added.

He said Pakistan is also looking at its huge gas reserves in Sui in Balochistan and in Sindh and if the investment environment is good then there may not be a need for imported gas. At present the production of gas is 4 billion cubic feet a day (BCFD) while the demand is 6 BCFD. This could double in 10 to 15 years time. Pakistan uses gas — the bulk of it for domestic use but 50 per cent of its energy comes from natural gas. According to the agreement with Iran signed in 2009, Pakistan should get 1 BCFD from the Iran Pakistan pipeline project. This along with the proposed Trans Afghanistan Pipeline or TAPI pipeline in which India is involved, should be able to meet its shortage of 2 BCFD. The company was also pinning its hopes on the TAPI project which if completed in the next four to five years could deliver 1.3 BCFD.

Indian Ambassador to U.S. bids farewell

Nirupama Rao, India's Ambassador to the U.S., marked the end of her tenure here as well as a forty-year career in diplomacy, at a function at the embassy residence attended by a galaxy of diplomats and well-wishers.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Rao, who also held the highest office in India's Ministry of External Affairs - the Foreign Secretary post - between 2009 and 2011, said that recent years had witnessed remarkable progress in the India-U.S. bilateral relationship.

She particularly underscored the efficacy of the bilateral Strategic Dialogue which began during her tenure as Foreign Secretary, and continues to serve as a principal mechanism for driving forward cooperation in areas such as regional initiatives, security cooperation, partnership in commerce, science and technology, education, and energy and environmental policy.

Ms. Rao was India's first woman Ambassador to China, from 2006 to 2009, and her other ambassadorial assignments included Peru and Bolivia, and Sri Lanka.

As India's U.S. Ambassador, she frequently travelled the breadth of the nation to connect with Americans and deepen people's understanding of India. She also maintained strong personal relationships with members of the U.S. Congress, many of whom were in attendance at the residence.

Ms. Rao was also a strong advocate of India's views on numerous contentious issues in foreign policy, most recently including India's position on patent law.

In the face of strident voices criticising the Indian Supreme Court's decision to deny pharmaceutical giant Novartis a patent for its cancer drug Glivec earlier this year, Ms. Rao wrote an op-ed in The Hill's Congress blog where she firmly argued that "India honours, not dishonours, patent laws." In the article she emphasised that India sought to "ensure a fair balance between the interests of innovators and the urgent need for improved health care."

Accompanied by her husband and former Chief Secretary of Karnataka, Sudhakar Rao and her two sons, Ms. Rao reflected on some of the high points of her time in Washington, most recently her efforts along with U.S. State Department's Under Secretary of State for Management Patrick Kennedy to secure a premises for the planned India Cultural Centre in the heart of the city.

Mr. Kennedy and John Holdren, the White House Director of Science and Technology Policy, praised Ms. Rao's efforts over the years that helped keep up the tempo of progress in bilateral cooperation.

Among the other attendees were Maryland Deputy Secretary of State Rajan Natarajan, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Nisha Biswal and Ms. Biswal's predecessor Robert Blake.

Ms. Rao will be succeeded in her role as U.S. Ambassador by S. Jaishankar, who has been the country's senior-most envoy to China since 2009.

Congress wary of Delhi meet helping BJP

The coming together of 14 non-Congress, non-BJP political parties at a "Convention for People's Unity Against Communalism" here on Wednesday, ahead of next year's general election, received a muted response from the Congress.

If its official response was non-committal, conversations with senior Congress leaders suggested that they were wary of the motives of the leaders of these largely regional parties, even as they made light of the fact that Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party was represented at the convention.

"In this country, there are two sorts of mentalities, one that believes in fraternity, the other in divide and rule," Congress spokesperson Raj Babbar said, when asked about the convention and whether it would form the core of a Third Front. "One section believes in secularism, the other in fascism," he continued, adding, "Those who spoke at today's convention spoke of oneness and unity, not about a Third Front. And it is the Congress that has been standing like a rock against the forces of communalism, for which we have been attacked."

Pressed further, Mr. Babbar said, "the Congress's belief system and commitment to the secular ideal is firm, and if that concern is being reflected on social and political platforms, that is good."

The ruling party has reason to be watchful for, though most speakers trained their guns on the BJP, some of them accused the Congress too of lapses. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta of the Asom Gana Parishad - a party which in the past was a BJP ally - questioned the Congress's secular credentials, and said the maximum number of communal riots had taken place on its watch. And CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat accused the Congress of creating a sense of despondency in the country that provided the ground for the ascendancy of right-wing forces. The NCP's D.P. Tripathi was ambivalent: "People are asking why I am here. Does being part of the government mean we do not fight against communalism? NCP is the only constituent of the UPA that has been part of the LDF in Kerala for 10 years," he said, adding, "Since 2000, the NCP has maintained that all secular forces need to unite against communalism. This should be taken up with a revolutionary zeal." His party colleague and Union Minister for Heavy Industries Praful Patel justified the NCP's participation, saying later that "in the era of coalition politics, we have to keep our options open of working with other parties."

Faced with this mixed message, two senior Congress leaders told The Hindu separately that while such a gathering helped to articulate the concerns of a vast section against the BJP and other right- wing forces, it also meant that it could help divide the minority vote. "We feel that this move will help the BJP as it could divide the minority votes. None of these parties can hope to win more than a maximum of 30 to 40 seats: it is only the Congress that has the geographical spread to take on Modi and the BJP," said one leader.

Seeking to put a more positive spin on the convention, a Congress functionary said, "It will help to create an atmosphere against the BJP. Some people have begun to say we are not strong enough to take on the BJP's communal agenda. So if there are parties willing to attack the BJP for us, that's welcome."

I never considered myself a singer: Manna Dey

Multiple National Award winner, Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke awardee Manna Dey died on Thursday morning in Bengaluru, following a renal failure and respiratory illness. In what could be one of his last interviews, the legendary singer, who sang over 4000 songs including Pyar Hua Ikrar Hua Hai (Shree 420, 1955), Aye Mere Pyare Watan (Kabuliwala, 1961), Aye Meri Zohra Jabeen (Waqt, 1965) and Yari Hai Imaan Mera (Zanjeer, 1973), spoke to journalist Ranjan Dasgupta on his last birthday in May, this year.

You call me a singer? What am I compared to Mohd Rafi or Hemant Kumar? Rafi was undoubtedly the greatest singer India ever had and if there was one golden voice, it was of Hemanta Mukherjee. Kishore Kumar was a born genius but with limitations as a singer, Mukhesh's nasal tone was unforgettable and Talat Mahmood's silken voice remains untouched.
My mind takes me to five decades ago when I was recording, Hoke Majboor Mujhe... at Famous Studio, Tardeo in 1963 with Mohd Rafi, Talat Maehmood and debutant singer Bhupinder Singh. The lyrics were penned by Kaifi azmi and music was by Madan Mohan. As I was rendering my lines, Zulfey girke..., Rafi looked into my eyes and I saw tears in them. There was an instant inspiration in me to give an additional melancholic touch to my lines. When the recoding was over, there was pin drop silence in the studio. It was broken with thunderous applause and clapping by Talat Mahmood, Bhupinder Singh and Madan Mohan as Mohd Rafi came and hugged me, saying, "Manna da, lajawab!" I also hugged him back, emotionally charged. Madan Mohan confessed that we all delivered better than his expectations and I personally congratulated Bhupinder Singh, who was a brilliant singer and I foresaw a bright future for him.

Shankar Jaikishan asked me to render, Ketki Gulab Juhi in pure classical form along with Pandit Bhimsen Joshi for the film Basant Bahar in 1956. I was nervous and just could not believe that in this singing competition, the grand maestro of Indian classical music was to be defeated by me. I asked Jaikishan, "How can this be possible?" Shankar, Jaikishen and Bhimsen Joshi explained to me that it was exactly the way the sequence was in the film. We recorded the song in just two takes and after the recording, I touched Pandit Bhimsen Joshi's feet in appreciation. Only a versatile genius like Shankar Jaikishen could have experimented in such a novel way for a film song.

I was once rendering the Western Oriented number, Jodi Humari Jumega Kaise Jani... with Asaha Bhonsle. Here was a new set of music directors, Laxmi Kant-Pyarelal, who was composing the numbers. I insisted that they opt for Mohd Rafi as he was the best choice for such a song. To my pleasant surprise, Laxmikant told me that he did approach Rafi earlier, and Rafi had only recommended me saying that only Manna Da can do justice to this number. While recording this song, Asha Bhonsle was amazed to see that I was rendering actual rock-n-roll. The only other song for which I did a similar act was for Gori tore banke... tuned by Chitragupta for Adhe din Adhe raat.

SD Burman, RD Burman, Kalyanji-Anandji and Naushad, I have sung for all these stalwarts. But I strongly protest AR Rahman's rendering of Bande Mataram. Why sing 'Bandeee' in such a peculiar style? No doubt he is a brilliant composer but I simply cannot go by the way he sang this song. In today's generation I consider Kavita Krishnamurthy and Shreya Ghosal very talented singers. They can surely take up where Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle and Geeta Dutt left. I have turned 94, my health is deteriorating badlybut I will always have fond memories of my singing career as that was the golden era of Indian music.

State relaxes deputation norms

State relaxes deputation norms

The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to relax austerity measures in respect of deputation of government servants to public sector undertakings and local self-governments.

The stipulation that the post in parent department will not be filled on deputation stands withdrawn. Deputation will be permitted only to posts sanctioned initially in local self-governments and public sector undertakings. The staff on deputation will have to be returned to their parent departments upon their promotion. The period of deputation will be extended only with consent of the parent department.

Though public sector undertakings and local self-governments are permitted to appoint professionals, appointments should be done only with prior permission of the government.

Briefing the media, the Chief Minister said the restrictions on deputations were modified following talks with employees' unions who had made a representation to the government seeking changes.

Replying to questions, the Chief Minister said the report that Additional Director General of Police T.P. Senkumar had misrepresented his caste for getting IPS selection was wrong. He was an Ezhava and this was recorded in his SSLC book. However, he got selected [to the IPS] in the general category. The government would not countenance propaganda to demoralise officials.

Mr. Chandy said that the government was against incarceration of PDP leader Abdul Nasir Maudani without trial. However, he was not going into the merits of the case as it was sub judice in another State. The government would decide on its stand on his bail petition before the Supreme Court later, now that the State had been made a party to the case, Mr. Chandy said.

There was no cause for concern regarding Maoist activities in the State. However, reports about their presence in the State could not be taken lightly, he added.

Australian scientists find gold in trees

Australian scientists find gold in trees

Australian scientists have literally struck gold.

Researchers from Perth have found tiny particles of gold hidden in eucalyptus trees, in a discovery which could help future prospectors to find deposits of the precious metal.

Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) researchers said that they believe that the trees, sitting on top of gold deposits buried deep underground, suck up the gold in their search for moisture during droughts, Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

"We weren't expecting this at all. To actually see the gold particles in the leaves was quite an eureka moment for us," said Melvyn Lintern, a geochemist at CSIRO.

"The particular trees that we did the research on appear to be bringing up gold from a remarkable 30 metres depth, which is about the equivalent of a 10-storey building," he said.

The gold was found in the resource-rich Kalgoorlie region of Western Australia, site of a major gold rush in the late 1800s.

The scientists used CSIRO's Maia detector at Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne for X-ray imaging to analyse extremely small particles at high resolution and found that the gold particles with diameter one-fifth of a human hair.

"The eucalyptus acts as a hydraulic pump — its roots extend tens of metres into the ground and draw up water containing the gold," Lintern said.

"As the gold is likely to be toxic to the plant, it's moved to the leaves and branches where it can be released or shed to the ground."

Lintern, however, said even 500 trees growing over a gold deposit would only yield enough gold for a wedding ring.

But scientists could use a technique known as "biogeochemical sampling" to give an indication of the presence of gold beneath the surface.

"By sampling and analysing vegetation for traces of minerals, we may get an idea of what's happening below the surface without the need to drill," Lintern said.

"It's a more targeted way of searching for minerals that reduces costs and impact on the environment."

He said the method could also be used to find other metals such as zinc and copper.

The researchers also found gold in the leaves of other trees, such as the Acacia Mulga.

"We've actually found gold not only in trees but in shrubs that are growing beneath the trees as well, so (it is) not restricted to any particular trees at all," Lintern said.

New discoveries of gold have fallen by 45 per cent in the past decade, while prices have skyrocketed as reserves steadily dwindle — the cost of the yellow metal shot up by 482 per cent between December 2000 and March this year.

In 2011, the US Geological Survey estimated there were 51,000 tonnes of gold left in reserve in the world.

Rupee down 27 paise against dollar in early trade

Rupee down 27 paise against dollar in early trade

The rupee lost 27 paise to Rs. 61.79 against the U.S. dollar in early trade on Tuesday on the Interbank Foreign Exchange due to appreciation of the Greenback against other overseas currencies.

Increased demand for the dollar from importers and banks also put pressure on the local currency.

Dealers attributed the fall in rupee to gains made by U.S. dollar against the euro and other overseas currencies ahead of U.S. jobs data and a lower opening in the domestic equity market.

The rupee weakened by 25 paise to close at Rs. 61.52 against the dollar in yesterday's trade on persistent demand from importers and banks as the U.S. currency strengthened overseas.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark Sensex fell 31.74 points, or 0.15 per cent, to 20,862.15 in early trade on Tuesday.

Ways to increase positivity in home

Ways to increase positivity in home

Ways to increase positivity in home

Here are some tips from a Vastu and expert for a life full of harmony.

In the present complex scenario, we do not find time for ourselves to analyse the various reasons that lead us to failures in health, wealth or relationships. Most of these problems are connected to major Vastu and Feng Shui defects. Dr Snehal S Deshpande lists some commandments which may help you to increase positive energy in your home:

- Always stand in the centre of your house with a compass in your hand to find out the directions of your house. The main entrance is the mouth of a house which brings in the energy. Avoid a property which has a door facing south-west, as it is the entry of the devil energy and brings in struggle and misfortunes. If your house already has one, fix two Hanumanji tiles outside the door and see the difference.

- Mandir or altar is the king of all Vastu rules — place it in the North-East and everything will start falling in place. Also, face the East while praying.

- Kitchen is the symbol of prosperity and should be ideally placed in the southeast. Kitchen in the North or North-East may bring financial and  problems. In this case, hang three bronze bowls upside down on the ceiling but do not hang over the stove.

- Master bedroom is the key to enter the door of stability and it must be in the South-West. You should sleep with your head in the South or West. But a breadwinner must never sleep in the North-East .

- Bathrooms and toilets have the energy of 'hell' which are best in west or South. But should never be in North and North-East or they bring financial, health and educational problems.

- Centre is the nose of your house from where your house breathes. It must be open and clutter-free. A wall here gives stomach and financial problems so fix a zero watt blue bulb on this wall and keep it on 24x7 .

- Cuts in any direction make a house paralyzed, mainly cuts in South-West, North, North-East and South-East give serious problems. There are many mysteries and secrets regarding the cuts and their cures.

Now, a rapid-fire round of cures
- Never use too much of bright colours such as red and purple for decorating your house or they may enhance sickness energy in the house, if any.

- Do not keep pictures of water or a fountain in your bedroom. It might adversely affect you.

- Do not keep your mandir/temple under any beam or cupboard or you will be always under stress.

- Do not keep heavy objects in the North East and North or it may block your finances.

- Do not keep bonsais in the house or they will hamper the growth in the respective area of your life.

- Mopping the floor twice a week with sea salt water will help you clean your house of negative energy.

- If arguments are the main ruling energy in your house, play a musical CD four-five times in a day and experience the calmness in the house.
